Owing to the marginalized status of the Congress party in the Lok Sabha, Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan has ruled out Leader of Opposition status (LoP status ) for the Congress party.
LoPs in both Houses of Parliament are posts that are at par with Cabinet Ministers.
The speaker had taken the opinion of Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi who had said that Congress did not have the numbers for its floor leader to be granted the LoP status.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi had written to Mahajan seeking the LoP status for Mallikarjun Kharge who is the party’s leader in the Lower House.
