CACHAR DISTRICT RECEIVED NATIONAL SILVER SKOCH AWARD


Cachar Deputy Commissioner, Keerthi Jalli received the National Silver SKOCH Award a few days ago for ‘Pushti Nirbhor’ (nutrition-dependent), a convergence project on transformation and development entailing setting up Nutri-gardens at houses in Dinnathpur Bagicha village.

 The village is near the India-Bangladesh border in the Katigorah circle of the Cachar district.

 Under the project: 30,000 seedlings of vegetables, fruits and herbal plants were distributed among 140 beneficiaries.

 Each household of the village was also given payment for 75 man-days to implement the project. The main objective was to train the villagers toward becoming self-reliant during the pandemic, grow enough for their own nutritional needs and sell the surplus in the markets.

About the award: Instituted in 2003, SKOCH Award salutes people, projects and institutions that go the extra mile to make India a better nation.

Promoting Organic Farming under Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) 

  • Government of India has been implementing dedicated scheme of Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) since 2015-16 to promote chemical free organic farming in the country in cluster mode.

 

  • Under the programme, financial assistance of Rs 50000/ha/3 years is provided for cluster formation, capacity building, incentive for inputs, value addition and marketing.

 

  • Out of it, Rs 31000/ ha / 3 years is provided for preparation / procurement of organic inputs such as bio/organic fertilisers, biopesticides, seeds etc. through DBT.

 

  • Rs 8800/ ha/ 3 years is provided for value addition and marketing that includes post harvest management practices like storage

 

  • A total fund of Rs 1197.64 cr has been released to states and UTs for the last four years under the programme.

 

  • Financial assistance of Rs 3000 /hectare for 3 years is provided for Cluster formation (of 20 ha) and Capacity building including exposure visits, and trainings of field functionaries.

Benefits to Farmers under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)

 

  • Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) is being implemented on actuarial/bidded premium rates.

 

  • However,Farmers including small farmers have to pay maximum 2% for Kharif, 1.5% for Rabi food and oilseed crops and 5% for commercial/horticultural crops.

 

  • The balance of actuarial/bidded premium is shared by the Central and State Government on 50: 50 basis and in case of North Eastern States on 90 : 10 basis from Kharif 2020.

 

Salient Features of PMFBY 

  • Increased risk coverage of Crop cycle – pre-sowing to post-harvest losses.

 

  • Provision of claims upto 25% of sum insured for prevented sowing.

 

  • Uniform seasonality discipline & Sum Insured for both loanee & non-loanee farmers.

 

  • Use of Remote Sensing Technology, Smartphones & Drones for quick estimation of crop losses to ensure early settlement of claims.

 

  • Making the scheme voluntary for all farmers instead of compulsory for loanee farmers.

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh flags-in Indian Army Skiing Expedition, ARMEX-21

 

  • Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh flagged-in the Indian Army Skiing Expedition, ARMEX-21, in New Delhi on July 23, 2021.

 

  • The ARMEX-21 was conducted in the mountain ranges of the Himalayan region to promote the adventure activity in the country and the Indian Army.

 

  • The expedition was flagged off at Karakoram Pass in Ladakh on March10, 2021 and culminated at Malari in Uttarakhand on July 06, 2021, covering 1,660 kms in 119 days.

 

  • Army Skiing Expedition conducted in Himalayan mountain ranges.

 

  • Covered 1,660 kms from Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Malari in Uttarakhand.

 

  • The team gathered information about several hitherto unchartered areas along international boundary.

Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY)

  • Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) was launched on 23rdSeptember 2018.

 

  • AB-PMJAY is the world’s largest Government funded health assurance scheme. AB-PMJAY provides health assurance of up to 5 Lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary healthcare hospitalizations.

 

  • AB-PMJAY is a completely cashless and paperless scheme. The benefits under AB-PMJAY are portable across the country.

 

  • National Health Authority, an attached office of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare with full functional autonomy, is the apex body implementing AB-PMJAY across the country.

 

  • The number of eligible beneficiaries under SECC 2011 is 10.74 crore (50 crore people).

 

  • 33 States/UTs implementing AB-PMJAY have further expanded the coverage of the scheme to include 13.44 crore families (65 crore people).

 

  • There is no cap on family size, or age or gender. AB-PMJAY is being implemented in all States and UTs barring West Bengal, NCT of Delhi and Odisha.

 

  • The States/UTs have been provided with the flexibility to implement the scheme in the operational model best suited to the local conditions. Thus, AB-PMJAY is being implemented in Insurance mode, Mixed mode and Trust mode.

NITI Aayog and IEA launch ‘Renewables Integration in India 2021’

  • A report on “Renewables Integration in India 2021” was jointly launched by Dr. Rakesh Sarwal, Additional Secretary, NITI Aayog & Mr. Keisuke Sadamori, Director of Energy Markets and Security, IEA on 22nd July, 2021.

 

  • The report is based on the outcome of three states workshops held with the Governments of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat.

 

  • The report uses IEA modelling results to show the effects of different flexibility options on the power system. The report highlights that India’s power system can efficiently integrate renewables (175 GW by 2022 and 450 GW by 2030).

 

  • Indian states need to employ a wide range of flexibility options – such as demand response, more flexible operation of coal based power plants, storage, and grid improvements – to transition to cleaner electricity systems.

 

  • Time of Use (ToU) tariffs will be an effective tool to incentivise demand side management and encourage flexible consumption.

AIFF MEN’S FOOTBALLER OF THE YEAR 2020-21


Senior India defender, Sandesh Jhingan was named the AIFF men’s Footballer of the Year 2020-21 season. It is the first time that the towering central defender has received the AIFF Player of the Year award, having won the Emerging Player of the Year Award in 2014.

 About Jhingan: Jhingan made his senior national team debut in 2015 in Guwahati and has since gone on to make 40 appearances for the Blue Tigers, scoring four goals.

 He was part of the Indian sides that lifted the Intercontinental Cup in 2018 and played out a memorable draw at the home of the Asian champions Qatar in 2019.

 Jhingan has captained the senior team on five occasions, the most recent being the international friendly against Oman in Dubai in March. He was conferred with the prestigious Arjuna Award last year.

 Another award: While midfielder Suresh Singh Wangjam was picked as the Emerging Player for the year award for 2020-21. The 20-year-old Suresh, who made his Blue Tigers debut earlier this year against Oman, was part of the Indian side that competed at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017.

GOI EXTENDED STAND UP INDIA SCHEME UPTO 2025


 

  • The Government of India has extended the duration of the ‘Stand Up India Scheme’ up to the year 2025.

 

  • The scheme was launched by the Prime Minister on 05 April 2016 to facilitate loans to Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and women borrowers, to promote entrepreneurship among them.

 

  • About the scheme: The scheme offers bank loans to women and SC & ST communities to encourage them in setting up a greenfield enterprise, outside of the farm sector, that is in the manufacturing, services or trading sector.

 

  • A total of 1,16,266 loans amounting to Rs. 26204.49 crore has been extended under the Scheme since its inception.

 

  • The loan under Stand Up India Scheme is extended by Scheduled Commercial Banks (SCBs) between Rs. 10 lakh and Rs.1 Crore.

IOC TO SET UP ‘FIRST GREEN HYDROGEN’ PLANT


 

  • Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), India’s largest oil firm, will build the first ‘green hydrogen’ plant of the country at its Mathura refinery, to meet the growing demand for both oil and cleaner forms of energy.

 

  • This will be the nation’s first green hydrogen unit. Previously, projects have been announced to produce ‘grey hydrogen’ using fossil fuels such as natural gas.

 

  • For this, the company will make use of 250 MW of electricity which it produces from renewable sources like solar power, to produce absolutely green hydrogen through electrolysis.

 

  • Mathura has been selected by virtue of its proximity to TTZ (Taj Trapezium Zone). Hydrogen is the latest buzz for meeting the world’s energy needs. Hydrogen, in itself, is a clean fuel but manufacturing it is energy-intensive and has carbon byproducts.

RUSSIA TEST-FIRED S-500 AIR DEFENCE SYSTEM


 

  • Russia has successfully test-fired its new S-500 air defence missile systems, from a southern training range, Kapustin Yar, on July 20, 2021.

 

  • It hit a high-speed ballistic target as planned. The S-500 missile system is under development by the Almaz-Antey Air Defence Concern.

 

  • After tests are successfully completed the first S-500 systems which are also named the Triumfator-M and Prometheus will be placed at an air defence unit outside the city of Moscow.

 

  • The S-500 is the most advanced anti-missile system in the world and is expected to have a range of 600km. This missile system is also capable of countering attacks from space.

 

  • The S-500, also known as Prometey or 55R6M “Triumfator-M”, is a Russian surface-to-air missile/anti-ballistic missile system which is the most advanced anti-missile system in the world and is capable of countering attacks from space.

JEFF BEZOS INTO SPACE ON NEW SHEPARD ROCKET SHIP


 

  • Billionaire Jeff Bezos has made a short journey to space, in the first crewed flight of his rocket ship, New Shepard.

 

  • He was accompanied by Mark Bezos, his brother, Wally Funk, an 82-year-old pioneer of the space race, and an 18-year-old student.

 

  • They travelled in a capsule with the biggest windows flown in space, offering stunning views of the Earth. On this flight was the oldest person who has been to space, Wally Funk and the youngest, student Oliver Daemen.

 

  • When the capsule touched back down after the 10-minute, 10-second flight, Jeff Bezos exclaimed: “Best day ever!”. New Shepard, built by Bezos’ company Blue Origin, is designed to serve the burgeoning market for space tourism.

CHINA UNVEILS MAGLEV TRAIN OF TOP SPEED 600 KPH


 

  • China unveiled a maglev train capable of a top speed of 600 kph.

 

  • The maximum speed would make the train, self-developed by China and manufactured in the coastal city of Qingdao, the fastest ground vehicle globally.

 

  • Using electromagnetic force, the maglev train “levitates” above the track with no contact between body and rail. China has been using the technology for almost two decades on a very limited scale.

 

  • About the train: Shanghai has a short maglev line running from one of its airports to town. At 600 kph, it would only take 2.5 hours to travel from Beijing to Shanghai by train – a journey of more than 1,000 km.

 

  • Launched in October 2016, the high-speed maglev train project saw the development of a magnetic-levitation train prototype with a designed top speed of 600 km per hour in 2019 and conducted a successful test run in June 2020.

REJUVENATION PROGRAMME OF SIX RIVERS IN UTTARAKHAND


 

  • The National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) in its 36th Executive Committee has approved new projects for the rejuvenation of six rivers in Uttarakhand.

 

  • According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), there are a total of nine polluted stretches in Uttarakhand and six of them are in the Udham Singh Nagar district on various tributaries or small rivers such as Bhela, Dhela, Kichha, Nandor, Pilankha and Kosi.

 

  • The projects shall cover the six polluted river stretches in the Kumaon region. Out of the rest three polluted stretches, the project of Ganga at Jagjeetpur, Haridwar has already been commissioned and on the remaining two, Namami Gange projects are already under execution.

 

  • It also approved Sewerage (I&D) scheme (Dhela River) Phase-1 of District Udham Singh Nagar, Uttarakhand under Namami Gange Programme at a sanctioned cost of Rs 199.36 crore.

ASSURED GOVT. JOBS TO NATIONAL GAMES MEDALLIST


 

  • The Assam State Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma has assured jobs for all National Games medalists of Assam from now on.

 

  • He also mentioned that all those who won medals in National Games so far for Assam would be given Sports Pension by the State Government. He hoped that this decision would help the sportspersons of the state.

 

  • The Chief Minister also announced that the house would send a goodwill message to boxer Lovlina Borgohain who will be vying for a medal in the Tokyo Olympics.

 

  • The Chief Minister stated about the increase of sports pension on the sixth day of the Assam Assembly cabinet meeting.

 

  • Further, the minister also said that the government is planning to increase the pension of sportsperson from Rs. 8000 to Rs. 10,000.

SAUDI ARABIA ENDS MALE GUARDIAN REQUIREMENT


 

  • According to the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, Saudi Arabia, women can now register for the annual Hajj pilgrimage without a male guardian (marham).

 

  • In registration guidelines of Hajj for domestic pilgrims, the ministry highlights, women do not need to require a male guardian to register and could do registration along with other women. Women wishing to perform Hajj will have to register individually.

 

  • India had announced the same rule in 2017 when the Modi government declared that women could go on Hajj without a male companion. Muslim women were exempted from mahram and also from the lottery system.

 

  • What is Hajj: It is an annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, which is considered as holiest city for Muslims. Hajj is a mandatory religious duty for Muslims which is must to carry at least once in their lifetime by all adult Muslims.

  • The Mumbai-based filmmaker’s first feature bagged the prestigious prize in a formidable field made up of 28 documentaries presented across various sections of the festival.

HARYANA GOVT. ‘ONE BLOCK ONE PRODUCT’ SCHEME


 

  • The Haryana government will soon introduce the ‘One Block, One Product’ scheme, to encourage and promote small industries in the rural areas.

 

  • Under the scheme, the state government plans to connect every block of the state with some industrial vision and the government is working expeditiously on this scheme.

 

  • Arrangements for common services, lab testing, packaging, transportation, accountancy will be set up in the cluster itself. Haryana’s ‘One District, One Product’ Scheme which is being implemented under MSME, has come up as a model across the country.

INTERNATIONAL CHESS DAY: JULY 20TH


 

  • The International Chess Day is celebrated annually on July 20, since 1966, to celebrate one of the most ancient and most popular games in history that promote fairness, equality, mutual respect and understanding among nations.

 

  • It was on this day that the International Chess Federation (FIDE) was founded, in 1924. The idea to celebrate the day as the international chess day was proposed by UNESCO.

 

  • This day has been celebrated in as many as 178 countries, and a resolution officially recognizing it was signed by the United Nations in 2019.

 

  • About the chess: Invented in India in the fifth century, this board game was originally named “Chaturanga”. Chess is likely one of the oldest games of this era. After the development of the game in India, it eventually spread to Persia.

 

  • The first modern chess tournament was held in London in 1851 and won by German Adolf Anderssen. On July 20, 1924, at the eighth summer Olympic games in Paris, France, the FIDE (World Chess Federation) was founded.

  • Science Exploration Day (also called Moon Day) is marked every year on 20 July. It was on this day in 1969 that Neil Armstrong and Edwin ‘Buzz’ Aldrin became the first humans to land on the Moon’s surface.

 

  • The origins of Space Exploration Day date back to man first walking on the moon, with the day itself first observed to commemorate this historic event during events held in the early 1970s.

 

  • Neil Armstrong was the first man to set foot on the moon’s surface. The Armstrong- Aldrin duo spent 21.5 hours on the surface of the moon out of which they spent 2.5 hours outside of their capsules.

 

  • To commemorate their achievement, the day was declared a holiday in 1984 by the then President of the United States, Ronald Reagan.

  • The US, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan have agreed in principle to establish a new quadrilateral diplomatic platform focused on enhancing regional connectivity.

 

  • The parties consider long-term peace and stability in Afghanistan critical to regional connectivity and agree that peace and regional connectivity are mutually reinforcing.

 

  • Afghanistan’s strategic location has for a long time been touted as a competitive advantage for the country. Afghanistan is bordered by Pakistan to the east and south, Iran to the west, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan to the north, and China to the northeast.

 

  • The formation of the new quad group is important amid China’s desire to extend its Belt Road Initiative (BRI) to Afghanistan.

 

  • The BRI, a multi-billion-dollar initiative launched by Chinese President Xi Jinping when he came to power in 2013, aims to link Southeast Asia, Central Asia, the Gulf region, Africa and Europe with a network of land and sea routes.

35% OF INDIA’S TIGER RANGE IS OUTSIDE PROTECTED AREA


 

  • Thirty-five per cent of India’s tiger ranges are outside protected areas and human-animal conflict affects over 75 percent of the world’s wild cat species, according to a WWF-UNEP report.

 

  • The report “A Future for All – A necessity for Human-Wildlife Coexistence”, examined rising human-wildlife battle, and has discovered that marine and terrestrial protected areas solely cowl 9.67 per cent globally.

 

  • With most of these protected areas disconnected from one another, many species rely upon human-dominated areas for his/her survival and shared landscapes. Protected areas play a more and more necessary function for the survival of key species similar to giant predators and herbivores. GOOGLE CLOUD TO LAUNCH NEW CLOUD REGION IN NCR


 

  • Google Cloud has announced the launch of its new Cloud Region in Delhi NCR, for customers and the public sector in India and across the Asia Pacific.

 

  • With the new region, the customers operating in the country will benefit from lower latency and higher performance of their cloud-based workloads and data.

 

  • This new Google Cloud region is the second such in India after Mumbai and the 10th in Asia-Pacific.

 

  • As the second cloud region, customers are expected to benefit from improved business continuity planning, while maintaining data sovereignty. Totally, 26 Google Cloud regions are present across the world.

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) inducted Mongolia, Tajikistan, and Switzerland as members at its 78th Annual General Meeting.

 

  • Mongolia and Tajikistan as the 22nd and 23rd members of the Asia region. Switzerland is Europe’s 35th member. With the ICC now comprising 106 members in total, including 94 associates.

BANGLADESHI NOBEL LAUREATE TO GET OLYMPIC LAUREL


 

  • Bangladeshi Nobel Peace Prize winner, Muhammad Yunus will receive the Olympic Laurel at the Tokyo Games, the second time the trophy will be awarded.

 

  • Yunus, whose pioneering micro-lender has been hailed for cutting poverty across the globe, will be honoured for “his extensive work in sport for development. The 81-year-old economist-turned-globe-trotting celebrity speaker won the Nobel in 2006.

 

  • He will be given the award at the Tokyo 2020 opening ceremony on July 23.

 

  • The Olympic Laurel was created five years ago to recognise endeavours in culture, education, peace and development through sport.

 

  • It was given for the first time at the 2016 Rio Games to Kenyan former Olympian Kip Keino, who opened a children’s home, a school and an athletes’ training centre in his home country.

 

  • About the Muhammad Yunus: Yunus founded the Grameen Bank in the 1980s and shared the Nobel Prize with the micro-lender. His initiatives include the Yunus Sports Hub, a network of social enterprises that promote development through sports.

 

  • Yunus has faced legal troubles in recent years after he was sacked in 2011 as head of Grameen Bank. His supporters say he has been targeted by Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who accused him of “sucking blood” from the poor with high-interest rates.

  • The Cannes Film Festival 2021 concluded on 17 July 2021. The jury, presided by Spike Lee, presented the awards at the Closing Ceremony. Julia Ducournau won the Cannes’ top prize, the Palme d’Or, for her film Titane, making her the second woman ever to win the award. The first was Jane Campion in 1993.

 

  • This year’s Cannes had a wide range of films, from Wes Anderson The French Dispatch to Julia Ducournau’s Titane, and Leos Carax’ Annette.

  • The Federal Bank has launched “FEDDY”, an Artificial Intelligence-powered virtual assistant to help customers with banking-related queries anytime.

 

  • The bank said while most of the similar AI-powered virtual assistants are available only on its website, FEDDY can be accessed via Alexa, Google Assistant and WhatsApp.

 

  • It is integrated into Google Business Messaging, a first-of-its-kind by an Indian bank.

 

  • The bank has recently come out with innovative and user-friendly facilities such as FedSelfie, under which individuals can open their accounts by merely taking a selfie, and Federal 24×7, which makes possible the opening of accounts through a video call to the bank.
